Key Events 2017

1. On February 20, the Second Meeting of the Second Academic Committee and the Annual Session of SAJOREC was held at Wuhan Botanical Garden. The Academic Committee recommended that SAJOREC should further consolidate goals and make overall planning of its joint research projects.

2. From March 16th to 17th, the Center for Agricultural Resources Research, IGDB and SAJOREC jointly held a seminar on the construction of the “China-Kenya Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center”.

3. From April 14 to 17, Wang Enge, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led a delegation to visit Mauritania and witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two sides on the Construction and Cooperation of the West Africa Regional Office of SAJOREC and the commitment of relevant principles.

4. On May 9, the State Council Information Office held a press conference. Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the progress made by CAS to support the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. Bai made a special introduction of the SAJOREC-JKUAT botanic garden in Kenya, which focuses on biodiversity-related cooperation and talent cultivation between China and Africa.

5. On May 15, the ‘XXIth Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa Congress’ was held in Nairobi, hosted by the National Museum in Kenya, co-sponsored by SAJOREC. Over 500 botanists and botany professionals from 30 countries and representatives from some world famous institutions of Plant Taxonomy came to attend the meeting.

6. In June, SAJOREC held a meeting to establish a party branch, aiming to help employees solve problems and difficulties when they work abroad.

7. In July, an MoU on the Management and Operation of SAJOREC between JKUAT and SAJOREC was formally signed.

8. On June 30, the 2nd meeting of the Second-term Board of Directors was held in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The meeting discussed the overall planning, major problems and challenges of its management and development.

9. On July 27, a working session of the Flora of Kenya Editorial Committee was jointly organized by SAJOREC and the National Museums of Kenya in Shenzhen, China. The conference was one of the important satellite conferences of the 19th International Botanical Congress.

On August 17, the Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology, CAS (one of the core member institutes of SAJOREC) and the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) hosted a symposium in Dar Es Salaam and unveiled the “Joint Research Station for East African Great Lakes and Urban Ecology (EAGLUE)”.

11. On September 18, the Madagascar Regional Office of SAJOREC and its laboratory renovation project was completed and was officially put into use.

12. On September 27, SAJOREC was invited to attend the "68th Anniversary Reception" held by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya.

13. On October 24, the “East African Natural Resources and Environment Research Center and Laboratory”, jointly built by the Xinjiang Institute of ecology and geography and University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) Rwanda was official operated.

14. On November 22, SAJOREC attended the China-Africa Symposium on International Technical Cooperation and signed a framework agreement on the China-Africa cooperation of technology transfer with Hubei Lianfeng Agricultural Group Co., Ltd and Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Exchange Center.

15. On December 1, the Medicinal Herb Garden set up and built by SAJOREC was formally completed and handed over to Maasai Mara University. Kenyan deputy president William Ruto attended the ceremony and spoke highly of SAJOREC’s contribution to the university and to the country.
